Alas, it does rain in Southern California. Today's wet weather is a welcome relief and a fitting welcome for World Rainforest Week. Lots of green events happening across the Southland, from designers presenting sustainable clothing shows for LA Fashion Week (actually, it's a month) to architectural lectures, workshops, and symposiums. Too much to list, in fact, so here are some highlights:
LA Design Export
As the economy shifts and the world shrinks, the opportunity to export sustainable modern design from LA is discussed by Sebastian Knorr of tecDESIGN speaking of his firm's sustainable projects in Taiwan, China, and Switzerland, such as eco-villas in Mallorca, Spain, Eco-City in Hamburg, Germany and high-tech office campuses in Singapore. At Altoon & Porter downtown today from 4-6pm.
Green Living Workshop
At Patagonia tonight, Sustainable Works conducts a Green Living Workshop, the first of a six session course covering water, energy, waste, chemicals, transportation, and food shopping. Participants learn about problems on a global, national and local scale. A WorksBook sustainability primer covers ten solutions for each topic, such as how to make an apartment composter.
Also on Tuesday night, at the Ambrose Hotel, an award-winning green boutique spot to stay in Santa Monica, a meet and greet event from 6 to 9 pm with organic snacks and beverages. For more networking, check out Green Drinks on Thursday night in Silver Lake/West Hollywood. Each week it's in a different neighborhood at a different locale, so gather with like-minded and share environmental tales. Go local, start a Green Drinks in your own hood.
Green Ecomony Think Tank
Again, in Santa Monica at Euphoria Annex on Main Street, Charles Eisenstein, author of "The Ascent of Humanity" discusses the emerging currency and ECOnomy on Wednesday. Last event filled up quick to check in early. The salon is free and the optional dinner is $14 from Rawvolution.
"Got Water?" a how-to symposium on Southern California water conservation with a panel of experts from city agencies including the Metro Water District, the City Engineer, to stop water waste with drought-tolerant tricks at the Valley Beth Shalom in Encino on Thursday, 7-9 pm.
