Grind for the Green

Grind for the Green,a 100% solar-powered hip hop concert designed for and organized by youth, was held last weekend in Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco. This was the first year for the concert, but organizers all said that the event was so successful that they plan on hosting one next year. Power for the stage was provided by Solar Living Institute and there were booths at the event promoting local green vendors and organizations. The event was free to the public and included workshops and booths on job training, green jobs and environmental justice, among other green topics. Promotions were paid by the City of San Francisco to hold the concert and organizers got marketing out through street promotions and myspace pages.

Zakiya Harris, co-founder of the event, said one goal has been about personalizing going green, especially with youth. Programs are printed on 100% recycled paper and attendees are fed 100% organic food. The rhymes also focused around green and planet-friendly themes.

Grind for the Green hosts monthly contests for musicians and workshops for youth all over the city.
