Girl in Turkey Organizes Fight to Stop Bird Flu and Save Swallows at Same Time!
When bird flu took the life of 3 of the other girls in her village in Turkey, Naz Belkaya, one of Action for Nature’s Young Eco-Heroes was motivated by the tragedy to help educate her community about both the bird flu and the environment.. Understanding the link between migrating birds, poultry, and humans, she set about to educate people about protecting the swallows and recognizing the symptoms of bird flu quickly. Named after one of the young girls who died, the Fatma Ozcan Swallow Project has children involved monitoring nesting activity in their area. And Naz herself has been organizing seminars, inviting speakers to talk with people about the issue of bird flu, and talking to local officials and physicians in her quest to educate people about protecting the environment and avoiding bird flu. Featured on the UN’s youth action report, she’s heading in the right direction and making a difference one nesting site and one person at a time.
