From the Forums: No Room for Pedestrians

greenvert is worried about the future of pedestrians:

On a recent trip, friends and I decided to walk from our hotel to a restaurant nearby. We ended up driving, though, because there was no safe way to cross 100 or so yards of divided highways, even though the restaurant was in sight! I've seen places like this all over the US- so built for auto traffic that they negate the very possibility of walking anywhere. A move towards more pedestrian traffic seems to be happening in large cities, but what hope is there for places like these?
