Environmental First Lady Honored by USPS with Forever Stamps
The environmental achievements of Lady Bird Johnson were commemorated last month with a dedication of the Lady Bird Johnson souvenir Forever stamps sheet. The ceremony honoring the former First Lady was held at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center of The University of Texas at Austin.
“Lady Bird Johnson changed the face of America — literally,” said U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors Chairman Thurgood Marshall, Jr., in a press release issued by the USPS. “She believed we had a responsibility to our environment to restore what had been damaged — and to remember what had been neglected. That’s why she led campaigns to clean up our cities and urged more Americans to visit national parks. One of her proudest achievements was the Highway Beautification Act. She was so vocal in her support for the legislation that it became known as ‘Lady Bird’s Bill.’”
The stamps, adaptations of stamps originally issued in the 1960s, commemorate her commitment to beautification projects--and encourage others to follow in her footsteps of beautification through planting trees, shrubs, bulbs and flowers.
The Lady Bird Johnson souvenir sheet features six stamps, a quote from the First Lady on her belief that the environment is the great equalizer, and a black-and-white photo of the First Lady taken from a family photograph shot in 1963 by Yoichi Okamoto. Lady Bird Johnson’s many successes are listed on the back of the stamp sheet. The stamp sheet also features her official White House portrait.
The Lady Bird Johnson stamps are Forever stamps. Forever stamps are always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail 1-ounce rate. Stamp collectors and fans of Lady Bird Johnson can use the following directions to receive first day of issue and first-day covers.
