Dr. McDreamy & Mercedes Donate Clean Diesel Vehicle to Dempsey Cancer Center
While Patrick Dempsey may play a steamy, dreamy doctor on tv's Greys Anatomy, his involvement in the medical community doesn't stop there. In his hometown of Lewiston, Maine, sits The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing where Dempsey has done more than just serve as a pretty face for the hospital. Mercedes Benz is now donating one of their R320 BlueTec clean diesel vehicles to help transport cancer patients comfortably. Could he get any dreamier? Each year Patrick Dempsey hosts the Patrick Dempsey 5K Challenge, which raises money for the cancer center. During its first year, the center (which provides free care and education to all cancer patients and their caregivers) helped over 6,000 patients and aided an additional 2,000 through their toll-free hotline. This year Mercedes is getting involved, both in the challenge and by donating one of their clean diesel vehicles.
Currently, there are multiple cancer facilities in the Dempsey Cancer Center, each of which do different tests and treatments, thus patients are often shuttled from location to location. Some patients don't qualify for existing Cancer Society programs which pay for transportation costs, and that is where this Mercedes car is so important.
The Mercedes Benz R320 BlueTec can go over 500 miles on a single tank of diesel gas and gets 20-30 percent fuel economy compared with a similar tank of gasoline. The EPA estimates that if 1/3 of all light-duty vehicles were clean diesel vehicles, America would save over 1.4 million barrels of oil a day. Needless to say, this clean diesel vehicle will also lower fuel costs at the hospital, compared with the other transport vehicles. The car is used as part of a ConnectShuttle program, which last year helped over 400 patients. In addition, the shuttle is used not just to go from building to building but also to transport patients from their homes (sometimes remote) to the hospital. Other celebs in love with the McDreamy Mecedes BlueTec: Kim Cattrall, Liv Tyler, Molly Sims, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jeremy Piven, Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber.
This year, the Patrick Dempsey Challenge will offer participants a 10, 25, 50 and 100 mile bike route, as well as a 5K Fun Run/Walk and a Kids Fun Run. There will also be an all day festival, as well as celeb watching, like cyclists George Hincapie and David Zabriskie. And of course, McDreamy himself. All of the money raised goes to the cancer center. If you'd like to take part, check the challenge out online at Dempsey Challenge.
