Before Christmas Tribute To Sustainable Development - "SD"

This poem is offered to encourage joining the "good fight" for sustainable development (SD). Done in good spirits, with credit to Clement Clarke Moore, author of A Visit from St. Nicholas, now known as "Twas a night before Christmas."

'Twas a night of sustainability'

'Twas a night of sustainability, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a louse;
The badges were hung by the entry with care,
In hopes that participants soon would be there;
For they were all nestled all snug in their beds
While visions of climate change clanged in their heads;
And climate with regulations and carbon with caps,
Had just started discussing long-suffering maps,
When out in the parking lot there arose such a clatter,
We sprang to the door to see what was the matter.Away with ideas we flew like a flash,
Tore open the door, threw them out in a dash.
The weak sun on the breast of the graying old snow
Gave a luster of doom to cars to and fro,
When, what should appear as if in our dreams,
But messages galore with a bundle of themes,
With a not-so-old driver, lively but not free,
We knew in a moment it must be SD.

More rapid than eagles these themes now they came,
SD whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Energy! Now, Dev! Now, Ecosys and Biz Role!
On, Water! On Buildings! Now Cement don't be droll!
To the top of the porch! Oh don't hit that wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the themes they sure flew,
With a barn full of messages, and SD oh so true!

And then, in a twinkling, we heard on the roof
The sighing and crying of each little goof.
As we all stepped back in and were turning around
Down the chimney SD came with a bound.

It was dressed all in messages, from head down to foot,
And its papers were all tarnished with carbon and soot;
A bundle called "change" it had put on wikipedia,
To get the attention of governments and media.

Its goals — how inspired! Its mission, how caring!
Its substance like roses, its objectives, how daring!
Its really long name drew up mouths like a bow,
But that is not important, as we all surely know;
Another publication it held tight in its grip
The attention it created has led many to trip!
It has a broad agenda, but a small core of believers
That shake when they try to pull all of the levers.

It is needed and insightful, a right good thing to be
And we laughed when we saw it, in all our good glee
A wink of its wit and a show of its cunning,
Show just how far it can go in its dunning.
It spoke lots of words, while getting to work,
And laid out the messages; then turned with a jerk,
Laying down ideas, and striking a pose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney it rose;
It sprang back to work, to its themes gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But we heard it exclaim, as it jumped up and took flight,

"Sustainability to all, and to all a good fight!"
