Planning your holiday party schedule in New York City can be calendar jujitsu, what with work parties, friends parties, family parties, but there are also a few green themed parties that the sustainably minded New Yorker shouldn't miss, and are also just plain fun. One of these parties, this upcoming Tuesday, December 14th, is the annual Green Drinks NYC Holiday Party. The party will be held at MI-5 bar in Tribeca from 8pm until midnight. Even if you have not attended a green drinks event in the past year, or ever, this is the one to attend. It is their ninth annual holiday event.Every year the party also tries to draw attention to a specific issue or cause. This year the focus is on the problems of plastics in the environment, especially in the ocean. David de Rothschild, Rothschild family heir, adventurer, environmentalist, and fox will be the celebrity speaker for the event. There will also be a silent auction to benefit Sculpt the Future Foundation and the Algalita Marine Research Foundation.
David de Rothschild is probably most famously known for his voyage earlier this year from San Francisco, California to Sydney, Australia, all on a 60 foot catamaran named the Plastiki because it is made out of 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles. De Rothschild's mission aimed to draw attention to the ailing health of our oceans, especially to the amount of plastic garbage and debris.
Sculpt the Future Foundation was founded in 2006 by David de Rothschild. The Algalita Marine Research Foundation is a non-profit dedicated to the protection of the marine environment and its watersheds through research, education, and restoration. Captain Charles Moore is the founder of this organization and the person who first discovered the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 1997.
The event also features several booths of local non-profits working on ocean issues, such as the Surfrider Foundation and Shark Savers. So come this Tuesday night, dressed in your sparkly holiday finest.
