1000 Awesome Things to Celebrate

In the midst of the holiday celebrations it's nice to remind yourself of the pleasures to be had from small things. 1000 Awesome Things to Celebrate is just a pause for a moment , a time to smile when you recognise some of life's little joys again.

Things like sleeping in your own bed after a long trip, being able to carry all the groceries from the car in one swoop, the feeling of brushing your teeth with a new toothbrush. These funny and slightly ironic awesome things are part of a charming website, 1000 Awesome Things to Celebrate. They're counting backwards from 1,000 and every day a new one is listed. Yesterday's was the Kids Table (always the best place to sit and fool around) and today's is # 605: Christmas Hugs with lovely photos of people hugging each other (and the dog) on this very special day.

Each day's entry is a little story with a sweet photo. The stories are quite personal, and some are ironic, whilst others are touching. From the surprising (#765: Thinking it's Thursday when it's really Friday) to the simply satisfying (#727: Letting go of the gas pump at just the right moment), the small victories (#791: Getting the armrest at the movies), and a favourite: #999 That last crumb in a bag of potato chips.

The writer's name is Neil Pasricha and he started writing it in May because "For two or three minutes a day we can sit around, cover our heads with a blanket and talk about how fun it is to take that first shower when you get home from camping for a week; or talk about getting that popcorn kernel out of your teeth; or wearing underwear just out of the dryer; or having a whole row to yourself on an airplane."

He seems like a pretty unpretentious guy, which he would be since he's Canadian. As he says: "I've never wanted flashy lights or hot, sexy ads on the site so that we could kind of have our own quiet, little corner in this big, banging world. I hope you know how great writing these has been for me and I want to say a sincere and heartfelt thanks to everyone reading the site."

The site has been such a hit that it won a 2009 Webby award and is being turned into a book, called "The Book of Awesome Snow Days, Bakery Air, Finding Money in Your Pocket and Other Simple, Brilliant Things." It will be published in April, 2010.

A very Merry Christmas to one and all.
