India, Planet 100 reports, has halted its first crop of genetically modified eggplant.Cultivation of the eggplant, India's first genetically modified food crop, was halted due to growing public concern over its safety. Though there is no evidence to suggest that it is a danger to humans, Jairam Ramesh, India's environment minister, said that it was his duty to "adopt a cautious, precautionary, principle-based approach."
The planting of genetically modified food crops, the minister said, would be suspended until more research could be done to determine the full extent of their impact on human health and the environment.
