On the Lighter Side... What Happens in Copenhagen Stays in Copenhagen
What will take place in Copenhagen over the next few week is very important. Decisions taken there will shape the future of our planet (one way or another) to some degree, so we need to pay attention to the serious issues. But inevitably, when there's a big event like this, there's a kind of circus going on. One of those funny but not-so-important stories concerns prostitutes in Copenhagen. Despite the legality of their trade there, the mayor of the city has sent a postcard to 160 hotels urging COP15 guests and delegates to 'Be sustainable - don't buy sex'. To retaliate against this "meddling" in their affairs, a Danish sex workers association has decided to offer free sex to anyone who can produce one of the postcards and a COP15 identity card.As Seen on Facebook: "The Climax Summit"
"This is sheer discrimination. Ritt Bjerregaard is abusing her position as Lord Mayor in using her power to prevent us carrying out our perfectly legal job. I don't understand how she can be allowed to contact people in this way," SIO Spokeswoman Susanne Møller tells avisen.dk.
Reminder: Don't Take Your Eyes Off the Ball
With so many media people present, there's bound to be more of these types of stories coming from Copenhagen. While they're good for a smile, we must be careful not to forget what's really going on: We're trying to find a solution to the problems caused by the daily burning of millions of barrels of oil, and tons of coal, and cubic meters of natural gas, etc. Human interest stories and mini-scandals can entertain, but they shouldn't distract.
