OECD Head: Turkish Environment Can Benefit from Financial Crisis

The recommendations:

  • A complete inventory of endangered species should be completed
  • More comprehensive legislation on water should be adopted
  • Environmental factors should play a bigger role in energy and transportation planning
  • Protected areas should be increased from 5 percent to 10 percent of overall land area by 2010
  • Environmental infrastructure should be developed and management of air, water, and natural assets improved
  • Renewable energy sources and regulatory standards should be boosted

"Such environmental progress will reward Turkey with the economic benefits of improved health and labor productivity, and of increased exports of environment-friendly products," the OECD concluded, a note that Gurría also sounded in his Istanbul speech:

"[P]rotecting the environment and fighting climate change must be considered as key drivers of economic growth. In spite of recent remarkable achievements, Turkey still needs to address a number of environmental challenges in sectors like water, biodiversity, energy, transport and climate change. These are fields of enormous opportunity for clever business."
