Greek Company Gives Pay Rises to Employees That Protect the Environment and Themselves

Recently I met the Spanish partners of Coco-mat, a greek company that makes sleeping products out of natural materials. The products are fantastic; made in Greece from renewable materials such as wood, wool, cotton, sea grass, horsehair, silk, linen, natural rubber, coco fibre and goose down, and at the same time good-looking and seriously comfortable. But, what I think is even more unusual than the high-quality eco-products, is the company's overall commitment to sustainability and well-being. For example, Coco-mat just launched a special program to motivate its employees to look after themselves and the environment. As of the first of this month, the company's employees in Greece will earn 5% more in their wages if they start using a bicycle to get to and from work, and a further 3% more if they quit smoking (although this might be a bit unfair for those who never smoked...).

Also customers travelling by bicycle to visit a Coco-mat store in Greece will be given a 5% discount on their purchase. You might think it is difficult to go mattress-shopping on a bike but Coco-mat in Amsterdam and Barcelona delivers the beds by bicycle to those living in the city (see video above). I think this company sets a great example of how small actions can make a big difference and hopefully inspires more businesses to go down that road, whether in debt-laden Greece or elsewhere.
