If you're programming your DVR for the weekend, consider "Battle for Blair Mountain: Working in America," a new CNN documentary that debuts on Sunday at 8 pm ET. It's about the battle over mountaintop removal, a true American tragedy.
Soledad O'Brien goes deep into the battle of Blair Mountain, once the site of one of the largest labor disputes in history, and now a mountain targeted for destruction. O'Brien interviews frontline community members, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, Senator Joseph Manchin (D-WV) and Robert Kennedy, Jr.
In June, hundreds of concerned citizens marched from Marmet, WV to Blair, WV over five days. They sought to bring attention to the situation at Blair Mountain, and to honor the 15,000 people who fought there for union rights 90 years ago.
In June, the Journal of Community Health published a study that found that among the 1.2 million citizens living in MTR mining counties in central Appalachia, an additional 60,000 cases of cancer are directly linked to the mining practice.
