Maker Faire 09: Greywater Systems Make A Great Hack
Photos by Jaymi Heimbuch
In the Homegrown Village at Maker Faire 09, water thankfully received a decent amount of attention, especially when it comes to hacking your pipes to be more efficient at using greywater. This diagram shows how easy it can be to get water from your sinks and showers out to become irrigation water for your yard.
The attention water received at the event is in part due to the growing awareness of water as a precious resource. So not only did we see a lot of green at Maker Faire, but we also saw a lot of blue.
And what a great hack a graywater system can be!
The Greywater Guerrillas are one such group that is working diligently to get people interested in installing systems in their homes.
The Greywater Guerrillas are a collaborative group of educators, designers, builders, and artists who educate and empower people to build sustainable water culture and infrastructure. We teach about sustainable water use through hand-on workshops and presentations.
It was at their booth that all matter of greywater information was available. Their handouts included literature encouraging people to conserve water first, and install a system second. Still, they showed the simplicity of installation, and hopefully a few Makers went home and pondered their pipes and what adjustments they'll make next weekend.
