Innovative Mapping Project Tracks Gulf Oil With Kites and Balloons (Slideshow)

Though a cap has sealed the leak, the Gulf oil spill disaster is still far from over. However, in the frantic days after the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon platform and the dire months that came after, lessons have been learned—about the power of corporations and the inefficiency of legislation—and unlikely heroes have emerged.
One such group of heroes are activist cartographers, led under the banner of the Grassroots Mapping Project, that use kites and weather balloons to create maps of the spreading oil and damaged beaches.
