Humidifier and Air Purifier Powered by... Your Cat?

Well here's one very interesting (and sketchy way) to charge your air purifier. Design student Yuan Gu must have a really hyperactive cat to dream up the Wool Ball Hybrid Humidifier. To make a product that is both "eco friendly and energy saving," Gu decided it would be great if the energy your cats put into playing with balls of wool were instead put toward batting this thing around the living room floor, drawing up enough charge to filter out the dust.

According to Tuvie, "This concept humidifier works in 2 modes: Standard and Hybrid. In Standard mode, this humidifier works by getting its power from external electric sources. This is the common way of using the humidifier, in this case the "hybrid" element is not in use. In Hybrid mode, Wool Ball works by getting its power from integrated battery. To recharge the battery, you can just plug the cable or roll it. As this device rolls, it emits a sound while the generator inside re-charges the battery. You can use it as a toy for your pet, it could be really fun."

Though I've yet to see a cat bat around a gigantic plastic ball, and if you were to hand this to your dog, it probably wouldn't last very long. Designers -- even students -- need to think about the longevity of a product. Unless it's created for pets, it's probably not a good idea to hand something over to animals if you want them to last very long.

However, we have seen some actually good ideas for kinetic energy harvesting toys, including Chinese exercise balls and soccer balls. So the idea isn't all bad, it's just better left to kids than cats, probably.
