Cyclehoop Locks for Bicycles are Effective and Good Design

Good looking and effective street furniture is a constant theme at TreeHugger. As are bicycles. So a hearty welcome to Cyclehoop, a small company specialising in cycle parking and locking.

The Cyclehoop transforms poles on pavement into a secure place to lock a bicycle. It's an easy solution that doesn't take up any space and takes two minutes to install.

The designer who launched the company had his bike stolen and started to think about how he could make a more secure lock. The design couldn't be simpler: a steel ring bisected by a tube. It makes poles, lamp posts, and railings into bike stands. They are a cheap, quick, and inobtrusive way to provide bicycle parking.

Municipalities are loving them because they are inexpensive and help local governments fulfill their responsibilities to cyclists easily. Camden, a local municipality, had a 53% drop in bicycle thefts in the two months after they were installed. They have also been installed as hoops along the cycle superhighways in London. It was the runner up to the Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme last year at the London Cycling Awards. That's pretty good company to lose to.

They also won the "Reinventing the Bike Shed", New York CityRacks international design competition for finding a solution to cycle parking inside buildings

Cyclehoop employs several architects dreaming up cycling related designs. They have all kinds of ideas: public bicycle pumps, bike locks on railings, movable sheds for parking, wall-mounted racks and two-tier double racks.

Just so you have something cool to ride in, Cyclehoop has also designed a series of cotton tee-shirts to wear on the road. Coming in a range of glorious colours and bicycle types, they are a nice alternative to the Lycra look.
