Alex's fascination with the relationship between the natural and built
environment began when he was seven: after accidentally throwning away
a toy, he found himself digging through a pile of trash outside his
New York City building. From then on, Alex could hardly pass a waste
pile without a small sigh for all the wonderful things that had
accidentally--and more often un-accidentally-- been discarded, to be
headed for unseen landfills.
At Harvard, Alex wrote articles about waste on campus and green
building projects, and worked with a group that encouraged resource
efficiency. As a senior, he worked with the campus environmental group
to mobilize the campus in encouraging the administration to make the
largest university purchase of wind power in the country.
Aside from Treehugger.com, Alex has written about the environment and
architecture for Time, the Guardian, South China Morning Post, China
Dialogue, Icon, Metropolis and i-D. He is features editor at
Beijing-based Urbane magazine.
