The Week in Pictures: Warmer Temps, Increased Precipitation, Best of Green Awards, and More (Slideshow)

From a new analysis by Clean Air-Cool Planet that shows in the northeast United States extreme precipitation events have been increasing over the past sixty years to the news that the Aral Sea, once the 4th largest freshwater lake in the world, has dried up to 10% of its former size, a lot happened this week in green. In honor of Earth Month and the fortieth anniversary of Earth Day, we introduce our second annual Best of Green Awards, which highlight the individuals and organizations that are pushing the green movement forward; biologists make one of the most stunning animal discoveries of the year--it's a cousin of the komodo dragon uncovered on an island in the Philippines; and new research in Proceedings of the Royal Society B show that plants in the UK are flowering earlier than at any time in the past 250 years.
